That’s More Like It

"Sami" I'm not overweight, I'm under- tall...really!

" Put me in coach, I'm ready to play "
I think everyone around the farm including the horses are starting to get more motivated.  This weekend the weather was gorgeous with temps hovering near 70 degrees.  They were all treated to a spa day, minus baths.  All manes and tails were trimmed, shedding blades and an assortment of brushes were used to groom the herd.

Then it was off to the arena for some basic longeing work.  Dusty longed perfectly again, my little superstar can’t wait to get back to work.  She even came to the gate when I called her in.  I’ve started putting her saddle on during work so when I actually do ride her she won’t be back sore.  I guess you could liken it to forming a callous on your fingertips when you start learning to play the guitar.

Blue was a good boy for the first time in a few weeks.  He’s back to his professional “ I know what I’m supposed to do” longeing attitude.  I was very proud of him too.

Sami was probably surprised to start back in work but it didn’t stop him from being a good boy.  Seems our chunky little monkey hasn’t forgotten one command he’s learned and he looked very good on the longe.  Way to go little guy!

My daughter longed Grady and Nate and they looked good also.  Both were very well behaved.  The only two left out of the longeing were Mellon because he’ s retired and would take offense at being asked to work and Donnie because he’s still dealing with his problem.  The vet is coming out Thursday to take another look at him.

So all in all we had a great time this weekend and the weather was perfect.  Now that’s more like it!

Until next time
Quote for Today
When your horse follows you with out being asked, when he rubs his head on yours, and when you look at him and feel a tingle down your spine you know you are loved...

  1. What a happy horse post! Your chunky monkey is adorable - I can relate to his issue. I can't wait to read about you and Dusty's inaugural ride.

Glad you got lots of horse time in this weekend. :)

  4. It's starting to warm up (sloooowly) in my neck of the woods, too! It's nice to see horses that have a little extra energy to play and have fun--a little sunshine is good for everyone. I'm glad to hear you'll be riding Dusty again soon.

  5. I covet your indoor. Also, I'm jealous of how shiny and not-hairy-at-all your horses are. I'm trying not to post pictures of my horses at all right now, for fear that they will be mistaken for yaks.

Sammi has the physique of a Warmblood stallion.... we'll just leave it at that. No need to bring his height up at all.

  6. Sami is such a cute little guy- and just look at his beautiful dapples!

It's been a little too warm here lately, my poor ponies are sweating just standing around the pasture.

  7. Shannon,
Sami is the only one who is not hairy and yak like and filthy. The rest are in the process of shedding out. Maybe it's because he's an Arabian and doesn't have much hair. As for looking like a stallion, well, he hasn't been one for two years now.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

  8. Sami has such an intelligent and elegant head. Beautifully dappled he is too. And what a gorgeous arena you have. I'm not jealous at all ;-)

Hope Donnie's problem will be resolved (or solved, too lazy to look up the correct translation and I'm sure you know what I mean. Not too lazy to type all these extra words though. The mind boggles ;-)) soon. Poor Donnie.

  9. Sammi is adorable.

My guys don't look too hairy until they start to sweat, which is almost immediately in this weather. It was in the upper 70's today and they have only just begun to shed. It's not exactly fair to them to work too hard but you've made a good, gentle start with everyone.

Hope Donnie feels better soon. Glad the vet is coming back to check things out. It is a bit worrisome.

  10. With that nice, big gymnasium to work in, Sami will be in tip top shape to be a starter in the first game of the season.

  13. We seem to have skipped the springtime 70s and gone straight to the early summer 80s (87 today - ick).

Sounds like everyone at your house is off to a great start this spring. Well, except for Donnie (hope you are feeling lots better soon man :o)

  15. How handsome Sami looks! I was just remembering what shape he was in when you rescued him. He's a lucky lucky horse, as are all of your herd. Love this weather! I only hope that we don't have a sweltering summer since it's this warm already. What's best about it is that there are no flies yet. Enjoy!

  16. Looks like everyone except Mellon and Donnie are ready to get back under the saddle just in time for the mud. Long winter breaks are terrific for the mind and the weather now ideal for getting back in shape. Good luck with Donnie....

  18. Wow, Sami looks good! And such a sweet face. Glad to hear spring is having the desired effect, even on Blue ;o) Can't wait to hear about your ride with Dusty. Lovely arena, btw.

  19. I love your indoor, too, and and I'm jealous about your temperatures being so high. I think saddling is a good idea--for the same reason. Sounds like they're all happy to be back working again.

  20. That's a good idea lunging them with the saddle on to prevent back soreness when you do start riding.

Now if only we could think of doing something with all this hair we get off in the spring. We'd be in the money!

  21. I think Sammi looks gorgeous - so shiny and sleek.

  23. Oh Sami! He is my favourite. Lovely to see some photos again. He looks more mature now, with or without belly...Thanks for sharing!
