Today's News & Pictures

Thought it  was about time to get the Happy New Year's post down.  There's not much happening here but I snapped a few pictures today. This morning it was 3 degrees when we went out to do the barn. By the time we finished it was 8.  We're in for a huge snow storm tonight and tomorrow.

"The sunrise this morning was gorgeous"

"I think we might have a geese problem"

Then she has to follow the boys out and try to convince them to come back and eat the easy food all day...she rarely does but they occasionally come up around lunchtime for a few bites

Found this bear paw print right outside the front of the barn doors. Yikes!

Not really happy about finding this so close to the barn but we're going to set up a trail cam and see if

it catches anything on tape.  So that's it for today.

  1. Gorgeous sunrise! Here I am happily scrolling through your photos and then I see the bear track- yikes! I would have been looking over my shoulder! Looks like a sizeable track. Please share what your game cam shows!

    1. Hi Shirley,
I’m hoping the camera doesn’t show anything! Maybe it won’t come back since the barn doors were shut and there was no food around anywhere. I was surprised it didn’t go for my daughter’s bee hives by the pond for the honey. But maybe it didn’t go that far and left after no luck by the barn. We’ll be looking over our shoulders during night check for sure!

  2. Hope this goes through - wow, gorgeous skies and hay area, and oh my gosh with that bear print!! Can’t wait to see what you find on the trail cam. I hope nothing! Keep us posted and stay as warm as you can. Hope the snow is less than what they are predicting!

    1. I'm hoping the bear gives up and realizes there's nothing to eat and its not getting in. We were wondering if its a young bear and the hunters around here killed the mother and its hungry. I'm sure we'll never know.

We're getting lots of snow today through tonight. It might not amount to how much they're predicting. But it is what it is and we'll deal with it there's not much else to do. The good news is that at least its in the 20's today. Still cold but not near 0!

  3. Wow, incredible sky and photos! Rosie is too funny. This one is a little too flat, that one is a little too fluffed and this one - is just right!! Yikes, that (black bear?) print would make me worry too. They can be so destructive. It seems early for bears to come out of hibernation. Have you had issues with bears in the past?

    1. Rosie cracks me up too. She hates to go out and would rather stay all day and stuff herself at the hay baskets. It's just easier to eat than trying to find a blade of grass here and there. The boys just head out and she feels she needs to follow. I can just hear her saying "stupid boys!"

I've never seen a bear on the property but have seen them crossing a road with a cub or two occasionally. I think it must be a black bear. The paw print isn't that big so maybe its a youngster. Around here the hunters may have shot the mother, because they are gun happy and love to shoot things. I know they put up cams in the woods and stalk the poor wildlife around here. Jerks! Anyway, I hope it doesn't come back.

    2. It’s amazing how beautiful a clear, cold day can be. If it’s sunny, the temperature doesn’t really matter. Just layer up! And I love layers. I think mares are just smarter than geldings. Their survival skills are better. Rosie is probably going nuts watchingn all those bad decisions. I hope the bear moves on. I suppose if he doesn’t find food, he will.

    3. It was a beautiful sunrise. Today we woke up to a foot or more of snow. I think mares think more than geldings so that makes them smarter. Case in point...the driveway was icy so coming in Rosie slipped a bit and after that took baby steps all the way to barn, Hanz And Sami ,not so much. They just slipped all the way in on the ice and couldn’t figure out why.

  4. Breathtaking sunrise! Amazing colours. Hope the snow wasn't too bad. So far, down here in the south of UK, we have lots and lots of rain and very waterlogged fields.
Love hearing the ongoing antics of the herd. I like Rosie's Goldilocks impression :) Much as it would be interesting to see what your cam shows, I hope the bear has moved on, that paw print looks HUGE!

    1. Hi Joy,
I hope he/she has moved on too! We got a fair amount of snow but we're used to winters here so just deal with it.

  5. Holy crap! I'm not sure if it would be enough, but you could add a ratchet strap or two to each hive. We do that for storms and loose cows. No experience with bears :-o.

    1. Thanks for the tip. I'll tell my daughter about the ratchet straps.

  6. Just stopping by to say, I was thinking of you and hope the pending ice storm you mentioned wasn't too problematic. Was it? Hope all is well :)

    1. Thanks for thinking of me aurora😊 the ice storm wasn’t too bad but we’ve been getting snow almost everyday so that’s a bummer. I’m sure you’re used to the snow where you live and we are too. Some years it’s a lot more than others and this is one of those years. We’ll get through it, we always do. Hope your arena build gets back on track soon. Hope all is well with you too.

    2. Glad things are good, even if snowy. We are in a warming trend and our arena build is back in progress.
