" Nikita " |
Last
Thursday we adopted a new addition into our family. Meet Nikita, she’s a 14-month-old German
Shepherd.
We got her from the Guide Dogs
of America. Apparently, she didn’t meet their stringent requirements so we were
able to adopt her. Nikita was already
named and since she’s been training under that name I really can’t change it
even though I’m not crazy about it. I’ve
tried calling her Nikki but she didn’t respond to that name. So Nikita it
is.
Ginger & Nikita |
Nikita
is very well trained and listens to every command, better than Ginger by the
way. I’m hoping some of her good
training will rub off on Ginger. Most
likely Ginger will corrupt her and I’ll have two dogs that won’t come when
called. Both dogs are getting along well... most of the time. There have been a few skirmishes over food,
bones and toys but they’ve seemed to work it out.
It’s
nice to see them playing and romping outside together. Being a southern California girl Nikita had
never seen snow. She loves it and lies
in the little patches we have left. I
think she is feeling good about her new home.
We love her already.
Quote for Today
“Dogs
are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To
sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden,
where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.” Milan Kundera
Nikita is beautiful and pre-trained. Wow!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I didn't really feel like training another puppy so she is perfect for us.
DeleteOh she's beautiful! And so happy Ginger has a friend again, even for the occasional skirmish. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ginger is getting used to having a sister and the battles are less every day. They have a great time playing together.
DeleteOh my goodness- she is beautiful. Congratulations! I love her name and her face and her coat (mostly because I don't have to brush it)!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Luckily, she had a bath and grooming before she got here so I'm good for a while in the brushing department.
DeleteHow could you NOT love that beautiful girl!!
ReplyDeleteShe is just so sweet and loving it's hard not to love her back.
DeleteWe loved our German Shepard so much, adopted him when he was 6 months old from the Humane Society. Shepards are such an awesome breed! Is Nikita your families first Shepard? She is SO gorgeous!! Not sure how you heard about the adoption opportunity, but what an awesome addition to your family! I bet Ginger is happy to have a playmate again.
ReplyDeleteNikita is not our first shepherd. We've had the breed before. My husband actually grew up with 3 or 4 at a time in his house. Ginger is having a good time playing with her new sister. I love German Shepherds, they are so smart and protective of their people. She's very friendly to everyone but she did give some visitors a start when they first saw her and she barked at them. She stopped right away when I told her to.
DeleteShe is beautiful and the name suits her. I'm glad she and Ginger are getting along well; that's always the hardest part about adding a new dog to the family.
ReplyDeleteIt took about three days before Ginger accepted that she was staying so she might as well get along. They are having fun.
DeleteWhat a beauty! How did you find her? She is a lucky girl to have ended up in your home. Makes Ginger look tiny! I'm sure you are very attached already. To get a new dog that is so well trained...what an advantage.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lori! Ginger is tiny compared to her in height but not in weight. Ginger needs to lose some weight and Nikita needs to gain some. I'm hoping all the exercise Ginger is getting now helps. As for how we got her, my husband is friends with the people who run the foundation. When she came up for adoption they let him know and the rest is history as they say. The training is a huge advantage in my book.:)
DeleteWow! What a looker! And the pre-training is wonderful. When it's time to find a new dog for the farm, I think I'll look at that option. I'm pretty old to raise another puppy. Though I'd really like another Aussie...
ReplyDeleteThanks! I love the Aussies too. My daughter's Aussie Molly that she had for 17 years was a rescue from an Australian Shepherd rescue association. I'm sure there must be one in every state. Molly was 9 months old when she got her. Puppies are adorable but I didn't feel like going through training time gain. When you're ready and if you're interested in a rescue let me know. I have a cousin who is well connected with anything to do with Aussies. She's been a breeder of merit for over 25 years.
DeleteWow! She is beautiful and how wonderful that she is so well trained already. It must be fun having two who are getting along so well. Look forward to some Nikita stories. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks billie I love her coloring and expressions. It's fun to watch them run and play outside. I'll have to wait and see if there are any stories to tell...
DeleteOh GHM!! She is Gorgeous!!! I am so partial to German Shepherds, they were my dad's favourite breed. So wonderful that she's already trained, and she and Ginger look so cute together. I had to smile at the thought that some of Ginger's ways may rub off on Nikita instead of the hoped for other way around :) Can't wait to hear about their escapades!
ReplyDeleteThanks Joy. She and Ginger are having fun together. Each day it gets better. I hope they don't have too many escapades to report unless they're the fun kind!
DeleteOh, Nikita is beautiful...absolutely STUNNING!! What a deal that she is also trained. She has found a wonderful home with you and you can see in her eyes she is quite comfortable there.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda. She seems to be fitting in comfortably and they are getting along better. I'm loving that she is also trained. The Dog Watch guy was here this morning and we're working on training her with her collar so she doesn't leave the property. We do live by a busy road. Ginger already knows the boundaries so it's easier to train Nikita not to go by the road because Ginger won't.
DeleteCongrats - what a beautiful girl. Nikita looks like a keeper for sure. I've been getting to play with a four month old mini Australian shepherd this week. Soooooo smart.
ReplyDeleteThanks C. I've had four Aussies and they are very smart and very sweet. They stick to you like Velcro too!
DeleteShe is adorable! Maybe something that sounds like Nikita? I think you may be stuck with with it but you can always try Rosita, Lolita, Dameta, Carlita...all of those names make me think of the same thing Nakita does though, a smart and sensual woman!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think I'm just going to stick with Nikita since she actually comes when I call her!
DeleteShe's gorgeous! I love GSD's.
