I'm a ...What?

" What did she say?"
In a recent conversation with my daughter about our herd, I mentioned, that since most of our horses are officially retired or in a reduced work load these days because they’re getting older and there are  some we’ve adopted with no intention of riding them at all but simply to give them a good home and with the loss of Dusty, the thought has crossed my mind that having some younger healthier/fitter horses in the herd might be fun. The fact that we actually have no room for more horses and barely have enough time for the ones we currently have is just a minor detail.

My thoughts on adding more horses to the herd prompted her to call me a
“horse-a-holic”  ( is that even a word?) and she suggested I seek professional help for this addiction. I thought it was a very funny observation and thought I'd share it.  I'm sure there are many more horseaholics out there!

Quote for Today
You can never have too many horses!

  1. I hear ya! I'd love to get one more horse, but at my age I'm afraid to. At least you have a daughter who can help out and is interested in horses. I don't want to think of any of my animals having to go to other homes. A scary thought for me. So what are you thinking of getting?

    1. Hi Lori,
I'm not getting any more horses. We really have enough to handle with six right now. It was just a thought that flitted through my mind and out of my mouth before common sense reared its ugly head.

My own addiction is kept in check nicely by an agreement with the Mister that I may not add any new horses unless I part with an old one (not about to happen).
I am married to a pretty smart guy. ;-)

  3. Dear Lord, I'm a horsaholic. Every time I see a foal, I want to bring it home!! I just saw one that looks almost identical to Cowboy. Hold me back!! When our older ones pass, which may never happen, by the looks of it, I do want to get at least one more solid trail horse--the kind anyone can ride and feel safe. It's tough when you make a commitment to keep the ones you have forever--only because they do become unrideable and you have a need for riding, but no more room to keep a new one. I have to admit, though, I do like the idea of you getting another.

    1. Hi Linda,
I'm afraid it won't be any time soon for me but it's hard not to at least think about it sometimes. We only have a six stall barn and when I still had Dusty we made a stall for Sami in the grooming stall. Now each horse has a proper stall. I honestly don't know if I could effectively train a young horse any more. I'm not as agile as I used to be!

  4. Yep, I'm one for sure! Wouldn't have it any other way, and I'm sure neither would you :)

    4. I didn't know about Dusty either!! I was way behind on blogs around that time and had to mark all as read in my reader. I'm so sorry. I was wondering why you hadn't mentioned her, but I hadn't had time to go back and find out what happened. Hugs!

  6. LOL Great word! In my heart I am, but reality is keeping me firmly in check ;)

  7. Reality is hard to deal with sometimes! It's one of my problems too.

  8. I was doing really well with the 'just two horses' thing. Except that this year I'm taking Carmen to shows and leaving Irish behind. And is it fair to leave him all by himself? and maybe we could get just a nice little QH to have on hand for trail riding and companionship. Or maybe I could breed Carmen.......

    1. Poor Irish, he sounds like he definitely needs a companion to keep him company while you're away with Carmen! ;)

  9. I do think there is one more horse for me but sometimes I wonder if I have any idea what I would be signing on for. At the moment I feel like we're a full barn too - but I totally get that fleeting thought that comes into my head - it passes more quickly now than it used to! :)

    1. I understand completely! I've learned over the years to never say never but as I get older "never" seems a more practical reality.

  11. Sounds perfectly normal to me! I think anyone that loves animals is tempted to bring another one home. When those thoughts creep into my head (and they frequently do) I always ask myself - is it fair to the animals we already have? Sometimes the answer is yes, but most of the time reality sets in and the answer is no. We are not animal flippers. When we welcome any type of animal into our family, they stay until we can no longer give them quality of life. With all that said, if you have room in your life there are plenty that would be sooo lucky to become part of your herd! Hay, a girls gotta dream at any age!! Keeps us young at heart :)

    1. I ask myself the same questions too. We aren't animal flippers either, if we take them in they have a home for life. Unfortunately, the reality is we really don't have the room or time for more right now. That doesn't stop me thinking though which could be a ad thing!
