Country Livin’

Spoiler alert.  This has nothing to do with horses but I found it interesting.  I was in the kitchen when I heard this rapping on the glass windows in the den.  Upon further investigation I found this turkey tapping on the window with his beak.  Turkeys have been visiting for the past few weeks or so usually in a gang of three.  Not today, the Lone Ranger was apparently looking for the birdseed I put out every morning.  Unfortunately, the resident squirrel was hogging the bird feeder.

The turkeys are usually very skittish and take off the minute they see anyone looking out the window. I was very surprised that he climbed the two steps and was having a look around at everything inside including the dog and me.  I grabbed my camera and wasn’t two inches from his head and was able to snap some pictures through the glass.  He never moved.  Tommy Gobbles may have been trying to tell me to chase the squirrel and refill the feeder.  I’ll never know because I don’t speak turkey.

Here are some pictures to prove I’m not hallucinating:
The gang of three

The morning ritual of breakfast

"Hello"

" Umm, excuse me, there seems to be an intruder in my feed"

"Are you even listening to me"

" So what are ya doing in there, any good shows on"

"Might as well leave, the service around here is for the birds"
Meet the fattest squirrel in the neighborhood!

  1. Had a little flock here a couple years ago. They became pretty bold when I was outside.

Some game farms do release birds for hunting season later in the year. Not sure they do turkeys but released birds might be a little bit more used to humans.

Either way, just be a bit cautious. If Tommy Gobbles gets too comfortable he could be dangerous. Somewhere on the Internet there was story of a whole neighborhood terrorized by one territorial Tom.

    1. Thanks for the advice Jean. There are no game farms around here but I do live next to protected land. We have deer, fox, coyotes, bear, bobcats etc. it's like wild kingdom. These turkeys usually run for cover if you even look out the window at them. Don't know why he was so curious today. But I don't go out when they're here anyway. They're very big and I can see how they could be dangerous if they adopted a bad attitude.

  4. Oh, how cool is that!? We hardly ever see wild turkeys around here! I would have loved seeing him, and peering in the window, so cool...I'll bet he was complaining about the service and the portly squirrel. :) I love your yard Arlyne! Great patio and the fencing in the background is right up my alley!
I've always enjoyed this quote from BF...but you gotta admit - those turkeys? They ain't so purdy!

    1. I think they're pretty cool but not the prettiest bird I've seen. This guy had an altercation with some crows this morning but it ended peacefully. The squirrels stayed clear and came back after the ruckus was over.

  5. Wow, that is unusual for a turkey to let a human get that close. Wonder if he was looking at his reflection in the windows? Have to ask, what do you use the cool metal containers for on either side of the turkey in the second to last photo (...leaving, service...) ? are they planters? with a history? I love metal stuff :)) especially unique & outdoors.

    1. The containers were copper pots for winding a hose around. They have a post in the center. It was. Huge pain to wind the hose in them so I filled them with dirt and made planters of them. Think I bought them from Frontgate.

    2. Sorry, I sound like a moron. I replied while I was in the dentists office on my phone without my reading glasses. I hate the punctuation they automatically do for you. So, basically they are receptacles for winding a hose inside of them. The trouble was the hose would get all tangled and never lay right. I think they make better planters.

    3. Great repurpose idea, looks like they make sturdy planters! Bet they are even prettier with flowering vines, or whatever your flower of choice is!! p.s. I got it & I too rarely post via my phone

  6. Even the wild turkeys want to live with you! :) That is too cool. My daughter would love the chance to take such close photos of those birds. (not sure what the 5 felines would think!)

    1. It's cool to see all the wild life around here. Hard to get pics sometimes they are so fast.

  7. Hmmm...my comment yesterday didn't post. I think I commented that those turkeys are very smart...they chose the perfect home. If I were a turkey, I'd be pecking on your window, too.

    1. I'm not sure how smart they are but it seems every animal in the neighborhood stops by to investigate if there's any food to be had. I only put out birdseed but I guess some are hopeful better
Menus might appear. I had a snake in my garage last week. Glad he left and hasn't returned!

    3. Ha! I know it. Let's hope there's no flood though. I'm not much good at navigating boats.

  8. Tommy Gobbles, love it!! :) Great pictures, he must have been desperate for you to sort Mr Chubby out. I'm amazed at the variety of wildlife you get, though I can well imagine your relief about the snake. Thank you for sharing :)

    1. Some days looking out the windows here I get a better show than watching TV.

  9. How fun! That's beautiful country in which you're livin'. One Thanksgiving, at the end of the day, when we were all sitting around stuffed from dinner, a large gang wandered up to my mother-in-laws window. Their timing was good.

    1. That was good timing on their part! I sort of felt bad I was having a turkey sandwich when they showed up.
