Not Again!

'Calm Before The Storm'   (Taken from the ferry while crossing L.I. Sound last week)

I’m sure the entire country has heard by now that the East Coast is in for a major hurricane.  Seems to me its  `deja vu all over again!  Just last year at the same exact time we were in for some odd weather that was dubbed “Snowtober” and we had a massive snowstorm.  A snowstorm at this time of year was very unusual for us but that didn’t stop it from blasting us with winds, ice and lots of snow.

This week of Halloween Mother Nature is treating us to a “Frankenstorm”.  I feel sorry for all the little Trick or Treater’s who are so excited with their costumes and the idea of getting free candy door to door.  School has been cancelled and we are under a state of emergency.

Last year at this time I’m also reminded that the day of the snowstorm I decided to take a quick ride on Blue before it hit and wound up in the hospital.  Nothing major but a huge pain in the butt (literally)!  The worst part was the ride home in the snowstorm and checking all the cars in the ditches for stranded people.  Anyway, I opted not to ride this weekend because, yes, I’m that superstitious.

We’ve battened down the hatches, filled gas cans for the generators, stored any objects that might become flying torpedoes, filled the troughs and generally should be prepared.  As my daughter was sliding the windows on the indoor shut a nest of wolf spiders fell into her hair.  She’s terrified of spiders so to say it was an unwelcome experience would be an understatement.  To illustrate my point: she once jumped out of her car on Main Street because there was a man-eating spider baring its fangs at her from the dashboard!  Another incident occurred while shutting the windows when a bat fell onto the windowsill slightly dazed and looking at her as if to say, “ I was just taking a nap, what the hell happened here!”  “Give me a minute to compose myself and I’ll be out of your way.”

It’s not our first time at the Hurricane Dance and from experience we know how to deal with nature’s fury.  I wish all my blogger friends in the path of Hurricane Sandy safety during the next few days.

Until next time

Quote for Today
Spooky wild and gusty; swirling dervishes of rattling leaves race by, fleeing the wind flung deadwood that cracks and thumps behind.  ~Dave Beard

  1. My sincere thoughts are with you. This is turning out to be one heck of a storm.

Having spiders drop on me is my absolute worst nightmare and just reading about it really gave me the willy's Ick, Ick, Ick...
I am sure writing on your blog will probably be the last thing you will need to deal with, but I hope you will post a quick update when you can. I will be thinking about you. Hugs to the four legged gang. Be safe.

  4. Sending good wishes your way as well. I guess I'll get hit first and the rest will head your way. Still hoping we (Central Jersey) have no snow but west of us might not be so lucky.

I too am superstitious. I no longer ride on the day of the Church Christmas vespers service because one year I fell off and broke my wrist. So that's always a "no ride" day.

    1. Sending good wishes your way too. I don't ride on April 1st either because of a bad fall. I'm thinking I better try and stay on more or I'll have too many days of superstitions to keep me out of the saddle!

  5. ... a NEST of wolfspiders... That sent a chill through me. Horses can sense a storm coming; best to not ride. Stay cozy inside and I hope you escape the worst of what Frankenstorm has to offer.

  6. The weather channel is giving me the heebie jebbies. I'm not looking forward to meeting Sandy at all. Can't believe it's going to reach over to our end of the state...high winds and flooding along with who knows what. This extreme weather is devastating. I hope the power stays on so we can find out if all of our friends are ok. Keep us posted.

    1. I'm hoping the power stays on too but I'm not counting on it. The power goes out around here on the best of days. Stay safe.

Always good to have a disaster plan. Hope you don't need it. Stay safe.

  9. I am with Margaret....A NEST OF SPIDERS!?? Holy crap. We are experiencing winds and rain and it is expected to amplify over the next few days. I am sending positive thoughts your way that Sandy does not cause too much inconvenience for you and yours. Take care.

    1. Thanks Wolfie,

Hope things will go well for you and you don't get much more than wind and some rain.

  10. Good judgement not to ride today...superstition has its reasons. Animals pick up energies we have no knowledge of so you are wise to listen to your horses.

Be safe...hope to be blogging with you this time next week.

  11. Keeping you all in my thoughts - and hoping for the very least effect from Sandy possible! Was that J with the nest of spiders? Good grief, that made me shy away from the keyboard just reading about it!! Keep us posted.

    1. Hi Billie,
It was J.. Anything else she can deal with just has a thing about spiders.

  12. My daughter can handle anything but spiders. They don't bother me at all so it's hard to understand the nightmare factor!

  13. My daughter is also scared of spiders. When I told her about what happened to J, she said, "OMG, I would scream my head off!" Glad your hatches are battened down. Good decision not to ride. Silk was prancing around yesterday with her tail straight up in the air before we tucked her in the safe, cozy barn. Stay safe!

  14. Whenever we hear of an impending "storm", I always get a little adrenaline rush of excitement at the thought of having to batten down the hatches and prepare for a show of Mother Nature's forces. So exciting!! However...I need to add that we do not have storms like the ones you experience on the east coast, or even of those common in the midwest. We get rain and wind, but it's very mild by comparison. You sound like you've prepared as best you can, and I'm sure
the animals are as cozy as possible as well. Will keep you all in my prayers for safety, and that the storm passes without causing damage. I would have had a little cardiac episode if those spiders had fallen in my hair too. Freaky!!! Eeeuuwwwww....
