Quick Update

It’s February 1^st and there’s not a whole lot happening at the farm with the horses.  They continue to have lots of warm mashes because of the cold weather we’ve been having and basically hanging around the hay baskets chowing down all day. We haven't been riding or working them at all, it's just too cold.  The indoor feels like walking into a meat locker!

Ginger had four seizures within 24 hours at the end of January.  She seems to have them every 28-30 days.  Her vet suggested I take her to a neurologist. Yes, there are actually doggie neurologists. I was surprised too. After her evaluation he prescribed an additional medication. So it will be wait and see how she does this month.  Fingers crossed she won’t have any more.

I don’t know if you remember back to December but the cardinal that has been tapping my windows is still here.  He’s actually tapping the window now and it’s very annoying.  Seems every time I turn my chair back to the desk he flies into the window and gives it a tap with his beak.  There is plenty of food outside and he knows where it is.  I don’t know if he wants to come in or what his agenda is.  He’s even brought some friends with him on occasion. Or maybe they’re just watching the show he puts on or are waiting for someone to come with a net. Personally, I think he might be a little bit “special”.

Our weather has been beyond ridiculous.  Temperatures below freezing, an ice storm, swirling snow squalls with very windy conditions and a few inches of snow once in a while.  I feel sorry for the folks in the parts of the country that are experiencing dangerously cold temperatures.  We have family and friends in Chicago and they say it is brutal.

The Woes of Winter

  As everyone knows it’s been a hellish winter with ridiculously low temps and lots of snowfall.  Haven’t been able to do anything with the horses except groom occasionally. I think they spend their days trying to keep warm by eating as much hay as possible. We've got a hay delivery on the way so we don't run out and they can keep munching to their hearts content. They are so bored I feel sorry for them.

It’s been so frigid that four out of six automatic waterers in the barn froze along with the water in the tack room.  So the bucket brigade from the house to the barn was in full force for a while.  The lines did un-freeze for a day but then refroze again the next day.  We were lucky that we were able to get the tack room sink pipes thawed so it’s much easier to fill the buckets at night. The puzzling part of the waterers is that the heaters are still working. So in our infinite wisdom of “all things concerning plumbing” we’ve decided that the pipes in the ground must have frozen in the extreme cold. 

Since there is no way to control the weather I’m of the opinion that we just go with the flow and keep hoping for an early Spring.  It’s got to get here sooner or later.

I hope the ice crystals show up in the pictures, they are sparkling like millions of diamonds. Which would all be so lovely, if we were not prisoners in the house, the driveway is treacherous and impassable. The lights are flickering on and off, branches are cracking and falling to the snowy ground, it should be an interesting day.
