Is It Still Winter?

Is It Still Winter?

It sure is.  Although we’ve only got a few more weeks to go until Spring, this winter is getting really old.  I’m not feeling the love of the glistening snowflakes falling from the heavens to coat the ground with its magical presence anymore.  Or the outrageously freezing temperatures that make you stop and check your fingers and toes to make sure you don't have frostbite.

Last week the automatic waterer in Dusty's stall burst and flooded her bedding etc. Of course, the best time to find this out was at night during bring in.  The whole stall had to be stripped, the water shut off and buckets filled etc.  Luckily, the plumber came the next day and fixed it. Burst pipes are just one of the joys of winter I can't wait to leave behind.

Haven't been doing much horse-wise either.  It's okay though; the horses have given me permission to take the winter off and get myself in better shape.  The only thing they require from me is occasional grooming and non- stop treats. I can do that.

  1. You have my deepest sympathies! I think we have about the same amount of snow.

  2. I'm tired of it too. The unrelenting cold is the main thing, though. Usually temperatures moderate a bit now and then. For some reason "now and then" has been "few and far between" over these last few weeks.

  3. I was just thinking about you today and wondering how your herd was handling this mess. Looks the same in our pasture, with a nasty coating of ice to make me nervous. Spring , please come soon!

  5. Maggie and Murphy are so cute! I am ready for this winter to be over too. Bring on the heat!

  6. I love the photo of the gang with their hay nets - blissfully unaware of all that goes on behind the scenes to make that happy photo possible! We have warmed up to 40s during the day and low 30s at night - and now I see snow is predicted here Tues/Wed/Thursday. Gak. We'll all be bursting at the seams for spring this year, that's for sure!!

  7. What a beautiful place you have! Sorry about the waterer, that is no fun. Hang in there! Just think, spring is going to feel grreat!!

  8. Unrelenting cold for you, heatwave and fires in Australia, non-stop storms and high winds for us ... the weather's gone mad!! Spring must be around the corner, then it'll all be over, it will. I refuse to believe otherwise.

What rubbish timing, the waterer bursting like that; I felt bad that you had all that work to do at the end of the day. Glad the plumber got to you that quickly.

Love the picture of the gang chowing down, but its great to see pictures of your doggies too. You're right, Murphy's expression speaks volumes!! Keep warm!

  9. This winter has been really weird. Record low temperatures, more snow than we've seen in years, and the occasional warm day at 50+degrees Fahrenheit. I have not been able to ride Harley due to his health issues, but really no one has been riding this winter due to the weather!

  10. Sorry to hear about the frozen pipes. What a mess. We have been sharing your pain up here. Even trail riding, when the temps allow, is a challenge because of the deepness of the snow. However, I try to focus on the fact that March is not far off and it may come in like a lion, but its out like a lamb. :-) Murphy's expression pretty much sums it up. Think warm thoughts!

  11. Hi GHM, sorry about your frozen pipes. Good news is that it's only 28 days until daylight savings time! I don't know about you, but the extra hour of daylight makes me feel like we can survive winter after all. Hang in there!

  12. It was -5 at my house when I fed the horses this morning, and it didn't feel that cold to me! What is this horrible winter doing to me?!

Bad luck about that waterer, probably froze in no time too :(

  13. Wow - that is terrible about the automatic waterer - so glad you got it fixed - perfect timing as you say - right at bring in time - but at least it wasn't during the night while sweet Dusty was in there! Oh...this winter has been...long!

  14. Only 5 more weeks to go, and a lot can happen, or change in that amount of time. Hang in there!! Sorry about the frozen waterer...always a bummer. We just had a winter storm!! It was awesome!! I had been thinking that this was one of our mildest winters in many years, less rain, less mud, mild temps and no snow. Then on Thursday it began to snow, and it never stopped snowing until Saturday night. We got about a foot of beautiful, fluffy powder and it was so fun!! Now we've normalized and are living in a giant slushie...I got Thursday afternoon off and Friday for SNOW DAYS!!!!! Oh my - what an unexpected gift!! I had so much fun being all domestic and taking care of the horses and such...I even baked a pie. :) However...I can understand you're weary of the whole winter thing. I hope and pray that your snow melts and you experience a warm up soon. Very soon!! :)

  15. GUILTY! they made that sign for me! Here the lovely snow has melted to a mucky mess, it's grey, dreary, and I LOVE IT! Although I wouldn't mind riding, but it's too slick for that. But send me all the snow I'm praying for!
