Quick Update

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  This is the first year I wasn’t home for the holiday.  We were down in Florida at Disneyland with my eldest daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.  It was fun watching the kids enjoy themselves.  We came home Friday and I can only say it’s nice to go away but it’s always nicer to come home.

Friday night I had some pains in my stomach and didn’t think much of it until the next morning when they got a little intense.  After confirming that I had a fever I called my doctor and he thought it might be wise to go to the emergency room and get checked out.  In August I was hospitalized with a bout of diverticulitis so we assumed it might be flaring up again.

After many hours in the ER and a CT scan I got the surprising news that I had appendicitis.  Lucky me, they said I needed surgery that night or the next morning.  Turns out Sunday morning was the best option for the surgeon.  So my appendix was taken out laparoscopically. I found it interesting that I was released from the recovery room after they were sure I was doing all right.

The instructions for my recovery are no heavy lifting or exercise for six weeks.  So there won’t be any riding for a while.  I’ll be taking a break until I feel better but I’ll keep up with all my favorite blogs.

Until next time

  3. Well! That's a surprise update. Can't believe you were released from the hospital so quickly...pretty amazing. That lifting advise is no joke. Here's hoping you have a very speedy recovery.

    1. Hi Lori,

Thanks for the well wishes. Don't think I'll be lifting much anytime soon. I was surprised they released me from recovery too.

  4. So so glad to hear 'that' waited till you got home, and it was caught quickly and dealt with speedily. Amazing what they can do now, and to be released so soon as well. But I do believe that people recover a lot more quickly when they're home. Wishing you a speedy recovery, hope you're not in any awful pain. Wonder what the horses will make of their prolonged 'holiday' ;o) And glad you had a fun time away with your family.

Thanks. We did have a nice holiday. The pain is awful right now but I do have pain pills that help :)

  5. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Great reason to let someone else cook Christmas lunch this year while you take it easy. If I lived in the US, rather than the UK I would come and help out with the horses :)
    Take care

  7. Eek, I'm so sorry!

I had my appendix out laproscopically about two and half years ago (though as it turned out I hadn't had appendicitis, which is a long story), and my surgeon was urging me back on a horse at 4 weeks out, funnily enough. He was very chill and very much got my horse endeavors. That said - I didn't feel like moving from my bed for the first two weeks of that. I remember that all too well!

    1. Hi Amanda,

You had your appendix taken out but didn't need too? That's awful. But at least you can never have appendicitis in the future so that's a plus, I guess? I'm not doing much but I can't stay in bed it would drive me crazy. I did a few loads of wash today. It was necessary though.

The surgeries they can perform today are nothing short of amazing. Wishing you a speedy recovery and keep to the strict rules along the way. You don't want to take any chances of injuring yourself.

    1. Thanks aurora. I was lucky to be home if this had to happen. My husband went food shopping yesterday, it's been years since he's done that! Everyone is helpful and I'm grateful to have such a loving family. I'm waiting for my son to come over and bring the Christmas tree up from the basement. Then I'll have something constructive to do.

  13. Thank goodness all is well!! And for laparoscopic surgery. My gall bladder was removed that way a number of years back, and my surgeon said I could ride the next week - which I did with no problems at all. I am betting your healing and recovery go quickly. Meanwhile, relax and enjoy the holiday season while everyone has a good excuse to pamper you!!

    1. Hi Billie,
The new methods of surgery are amazing and there is a lot less cutting and down time which I'm grateful for. I hope I heal quickly and get back in the swing of things. Sitting around is not my thing, i need to be moving.

  14. Well that was unexpected! I am glad that you went to the hospital and that the surgery was over quickly. I can't stand the anticipation of those sorts of things. Your horses will just have to enjoy a little vacation.

    Happy Belated Turkey Day!

    1. Thanks Val. It was unexpected, no one was more surprised than me when they said I had appendicitis and would be operated on that night or the next morning. It just seems so random that I would get something like this at my age but actually one of the operating room nurses said her grandfather got this at 91. Oh well, you just never know.

  16. Glad you're okay! Well, if it had to happen at any time of year, this is a good time because now you will have more time to concentrate on the holidays guilt-free. No worrying, oh, I should have ridden the horse today.

  17. Hi Debi,
Thanks I'm glad things turned out ok too. As soon as the pain goes away I still have the tree and some decorations to put up. I'm going to start wrapping presents today and doing the cards. The horses will have to wait for a while. I'm sure they could care less.

  18. Oh my, that's a bit scary! But I'm so happy to hear that you're on the mend. :) These things happen so fast, and we just never know what tomorrow will bring. So glad you're going to be alright! At least it's the best time of year for lounging around inside where it's warm and cozy, right?
Your Thanksgiving sounds fun. It's great to mix it up a bit with the holidays, and being around kids is always enlightening, and tiring. But I agree. It always feels so wonderful to come back home!!! Blessings my friend, and take care of yourself.

  22. Thank goodness it was caught quickly! (And done laproscopically.) I wish you a comfortable and speedy recovery. The horses will be happy to be horses and have some time off, especially in December, lol.

  23. I had another hip surgery just before Thanksgiving (on purpose) so I'm more or less out of commission too. Walking with crutches AND not being able to lift anything really puts a crimp in the style! Take the time to slow down and do stuff like organize photos on the computer, shop online, read good books, and now and then you can go smell the horses and rub some velvet noses!
