Tallest Living Horse

" Big Jake "

 Tallest Living Horse

Meet "Big Jake" the world's tallest living horse. The 9-year old Belgian gelding measured 20 hands 2.75 inches - that's 82.75 inches, or 210.19 centimeters - without shoes at Smokey Hollow Farms in Poynette, Wis.

(From the Guinness Book of World Records)

Someone sent this to me in an e-mail today and I thought I'd share with everyone.  He looks so sweet doesn't he?

Until next time

  1. Just incredible!! I'll bet he is a sweetheart too.
Those big horses usually are. I remember one time, here at the clinic, a client who has Belgians brought in a couple of her horses for dentals. Now Patsy is a tiny woman, maybe 5'1" and weighs 105 at the most. It's hilarious in itself to see her handle these horses because if they turn their heads to look at something, they take her with them, and it makes her so mad. :) Anyway Jeffrey was in the stocks, and he looked like a body builder wearing a muscle T in there. His body was bulging on all sides and when he raised his head, the tips of his ears brushed the support bar which is what we hang IV bags from, waaay up there! Jeffrey has a permanent trach and he tried to whinny at his buddy in the trailer, and because he exhales air our the neck hole, he blasted me right in the face since I was standing directly in front of him...scared the heck out of me!! Not what I was expecting. :)

    1. Great story! Jeffrey sounds like a nice horse. I can see where the air coming out of a trach whole could be disconcerting.

  3. He is a big boy. Guess he can eat his share.

  4. Still have to take up my tack store owner on his offer to let me ride his big boy. A horse that size needs to have a good disposition. Nothing would ever be able to control him if he decided to be bad. He is huge!! Can you even imagine how powerful he must be?

    1. Jean,
It should be fun to ride the tack store owners big guy. I was on a horse almost as big as him once and I was a little nervous when I saw how far down below the ground seemed. :) I can't even imagine how powerful this guy is but I'm sure he's a good boy.

  6. Holy Cow! Can you imagine getting way up on that big guy? That would be so fun. His feet look humongous, I bet the ground shakes when he walks around (he he he). I would love see him in person. He looks like a pretty friendly guy too. He has that kind look in his eye, I like that.

    1. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I wonder how they groom him. A ladder?

    2. Maybe those things they use to fix traffic signals. Cherry pickers? Who would know if he was even dirty up there? :-)

Gentle giant probably - not really a horse anymore - a different species!

  13. Merri,

I think he probably is. He's got such a kind eye and sweet face.

  14. Oh my. He looks absolutely lovely. He probably needs two humans to look after his needs, from feeding to mucking out.

  15. He is gorgeous! I don't know why anyone would want a horse that big though lol. He must cost a fortune to feed!

    1. I read that he doesn't eat any more(or less) than other horses. But he is gorgeous. I love big horses.

    2. Really? I would think he'd eat two to three times more hay than a regular sized horse. Then again drafts are known for being air ferns. My Percheron (who is only 16hh) eats more hay than my light horse (and his poop piles are three times as big lol), but the same amount of feed because I feed a ration balancer. :D I love big horses too, but I think he's a bit big even for my tastes lol!

  16. Isn't Big Jake just something! Looks like we were reading about him at the same time. I got stuck trying to find what farm he came from in Nebraska. It's interesting that "Tina" (the title holder in 2008) also came from Nebraska. The video of Big Jake at the Midwest Horse Fair is quite something. That is one BIG boy!

    1. I guess we were reading about him at the same time and decided he was worthy of his own post. Two minds with a single thought?

  17. LOL! I went back and looked at the link Mary posted and they measured him the exact same way I measure Chrome. With a board, level and tape. :D

  18. Continuing ...
Isn't that just a kick how they have another BIG GUY named "Almighty Bruce"... and they are off chasing another trophy for having the "biggest team" in the world. The more I looked for info about them, the more I found. Just kept writing! I'd sure love to visit that place.

I so love those big horses! We took a wonderful tour to Northern California to visit the Simpson Percheron Horse Farm. I was in heaven!
