The Mounting Block

View from the patio
As many of you may know from past posts I had some difficulty at the mounting block with my mare Dusty.  She was impossible to deal with most of the time because of her swinging her butt out, bolting and just refusing to let me get in the saddle without a fight.  I’ve got to say that after years of this behavior and many different training techniques to get her to stand quiet we eventually came to an agreement and she was behaving towards the end. The difficulties we were having did make me lose confidence about getting on a horse.

I’m happy to report that Blue is a pleasure at the mounting block and stands like a rock until I’m in the saddle. My confidence and trust is returning.  We had a very nice ride on Sunday and the weather couldn’t have been nicer.  A perfect fall day with a great horse equals a huge smile and a satisfied happy feeling that’s hard to describe. I’m sure everyone has had this feeling too.

I thought I would include a picture of the mounting block we had built into a corner in the indoor arena.  After many frustrating attempts to get on Dusty it came to a point where the mounting block I used had to be “just right” like Goldilocks and The Three Bears.  “Oh, this one’s too low or this one’s too high”. I’m sure it sounds like an excuse and it most likely was at some point.   So it was back to the drawing board to find the perfect height.
And, drum roll please:

"the four step mounting block"
"the three step"

When we combined them we got the perfect mounting block.
Steps from either side and two platform heights make this good for any size horse!

Quote for Today,
He who needs a mounting block had better not fall off in the middle of the field.

  1. It does make a big difference if you can get on without incidence. I like your custom made platform. As I get older, I seem to need more steps.

  4. WOW!!! That is the fanciest thing I've ever seen for mounting!! You are a lucky girl!! I'm glad you're enjoying some rides--there's no better feeling. We just survived the rainiest month on record in Spokane, so it hasn't been my usual October with lots and lots of crisp, sunny, fall rides. I miss them so much.

  5. How awesome is that!? And it could double as a stage for when you have musicians over to play for you while you're riding! :) Love it!
So happy you got a wonderful ride in. I agree, there's nothing better in the world for us horsey gals. May you and Blue keep up the good work and just keep getting better.
I'll second what Linda said about the wettest October on record...us too, positively not able to be outside for fear of drowning. Hoping November dries out and gets colder to kill these pesky flies that we still have.

  10. I dunno...when my Maddie stepped away from the block, I just picked it up and followed her. Might not work with this one! ;-)
Kidding aside, it's functional AND beautiful!

  11. You need to get a patent for that last mounting block! So nice that you are riding.

  12. Fan-TAS-tic!!!
I use a block also (that Mr Shoes made) reasoning that, at my age & with a knee half made of pins & steel bars, I only have so many step-ups from the ground left in me & I prefer to save the effort for when it's necessary. Makes pee stops further & fewer between &, before I dismount, I scout for any little dip in the ground to give me some advantage on the remount. So long as I can keep swinging a leg over, I aim to keep at it, block or no block. ;-)

What a gorgeous fall photo -- the leaves have been off 90% of the trees here for over a month now.
