Mellon Update

'Mellon' rolling in the deep (mud) and feeling better
Our vet was out yesterday to reevaluate Mellon.  He is now done with his first month of medicine for EPM.  The vet was very pleased with how well he’s doing.  He upgraded him 2 grades instead of 1 because of he's progressed so well so far.  He'll probably never be 100%, but this is better news than we could have hoped for!   Mellon has been allowed out with the rest of the herd for about a week now and the vet sees no reason to not continue letting him have his freedom.  He’s happiest when he’s among his herd so we feel mentally as well as physically it is the right thing to do.  Dusty is also delighted to have a vacation from her nursing duties.

On Monday night they decided not to grace us with their presence for dinner and opted to stay out.  The rule around here is if you are not in the catch pen by 7 p.m. you will be spending the night outside.  I think their “you are my slave and here to serve me” attitude sort of backfired on them this time.  I believe it went down to the low 20’s and they had to deal with the cold.  Color me surprised that Dusty didn’t come in, because she had her grazing muzzle on and usually is in a hurry to get it off.  In the morning they were all looking miserable and wanted to come in.

'Blue'  the service around here is a little slow
The breakfast buffet was served promptly.  Then Donnie and Blue lay down and took a well-deserved nap.  Blue is a professional napper by the way.  He can sleep anywhere at anytime and doesn’t like to miss his beauty sleep.  When it was time to be turned out to pasture again, they all came to their doors and waited--all except Blue of course.  He continued to eat from his hay net with his butt to the door as if to say, “I’ll let you know when I’m ready, but not just yet.”  So he was left to munch happily away while the service staff went into the house.

The barn is visible from the kitchen window so Blue could be checked on periodically.  After an hour or so he poked his nose around the stall opening and stared at the house.  This is his way of saying he’s ready to go out.  I love this horse and get such a kick out of his unique personality.  He’s quite a character.

p.s. The farm has power, but we still have no power or phones at my house.  All my neighbors’ power was restored on Monday night but since our lines are underground they forgot to hook us up.  We called and they had a crew come last night to assess the situation. I’m hoping that sometime today they’ll be able to hook us up.  Probably just in time for the N’or Easter to take it down again.  The phone company said we’d have service by Saturday at 8 p.m., which is pretty specific.  If they can be that precise on time I think they could do a better job with service to customers.

Until next time

    1. I've never seen a horse as resilient or tough as Mellon. I hope he stays healthy for a very long time too.

He really does live in "his" moment doesn't he. I just love that horse.

  3. Blue has got you well trained! What a clever boy.
How frustrating that they forgot to reconnect you, but at least you have power at the farm
    And who needs phones, anyway!

    1. Blue is a character for sure. They are working on the lines right now...fingers crossed. It just started snowing here, we're in for a noreaster storm and it's started. I don't mind the phone situation I'm not a big talker.

  4. Sweet, smart blue. Glad you have power at the farm...it was in the 20s here last night. Such good news about Mellon.

    1. It was in the 20's here too. Right now we're dealing with the NorEaster and it is snowing like crazy.

  5. Cheers for "Mellon"!! What a wonderful boy! Now, I'd say "Blue" has life all figured out, along with the staff. Love your quote, so true!

    1. We are very pleased about Mellon's progress. He is one unique horse. But then again they all are. Blue has had life figured out from the moment we got him when he was 4. Unusual guy but very charming.

  6. Good news about Mellon and your power, although it must have been so irritating to have waited patiently only to be forgotten!

There is just no way Harley would ever choose to miss a meal. They must have some tasty grass out there!

    1. I think they misjudged the weather. I don't know how tasty the grass was with frost on it though.

  7. Your horses have such unique personalities and you have a way with words that brings them to life for us so far away. Glad Mellon is so much better, no doubt from Dusty's ministrations. Maybe I should put my husband in with Dusty for awhile the next time he complains of a backache.

Hope your power comes on, and stays on, SOON!

    1. Thanks D.J. Sorry your husband has back trouble but I know from experience Dusty really doesn't suit the nursing profession. A little too self involved I'd say.

  8. Love the "service staff" comment. It suits perfectly.

Sending power vibes your way, now that I have some--for the time being. This snow is miserable. Mother nature has it in for the East Coast this year.

    1. hi billie,

The power did stay on during the storm. We got about 9 inches of snow though. A bit early but this crazy weather is so out of character for this time of year. We still have no phones though.

Mellon is doing well and will be on another medicine regiment for 2 more months. So far he hates it and spits it out but we'll figure something out for him.

  10. I started following your blog because of Mellon. Glad to hear Mellon is doing better!! I had a gelding 5-6 years ago that was graded 1 and ended up returning back to 95-100% in his training :)

    1. Thanks for the encouraging words Allison. We're happy Mellon is doing better and just want him to be comfortable. He's 25 and retired so he won't be going to work at all. I'm glad your horse returned to 100%!

  11. Yay! Great news about Mellon. I love that picture of him covered in mud. :-) It's obvious that Blue is serious about his beauty sleep...it's worked, because he's one handsome dude.

    1. Hi Wolfie,

We're very pleased with Mellon's diagnosis so far. All of our horses are professional 'mudders' and really put a lot of effort into being filthy. Thank you, Blue is one handsome dude with a lot of character. I'm sure he owes it all to his beauty sleep!

  12. I just love your barn. I laughed at the "breakfast buffet". Some horses do live the "high" life. :) Hope the N'Easter does little damage to your area. Hang in there.

    1. Our horses are very spoiled. But they're worth it for all the joy they give us.

  13. I'm so happy that Mellon is out and rolling about again! And Blue certainly knows how his "staff" cares about him enough to keep glancing out the window to see if he's ready yet. Sounds like something Silk would do too. Do you have power at home yet? This is crazy weather - it's supposed to go up into the 60's in a few days.

    1. I think all our horse have "our number" and know what they can and can't get away with. Blue is a constant source of amusement.

We got our power on yesterday afternoon. Just in time for the storm. Luckily, we haven't lost it...yet.

  14. I hope you're okay after the last storm. It's bad here in Jersey. I'm okay down here in south Jersey. The eye passed right over us and nothing happened. I learned it's the safest place. Plus we didn't even get a flake when the Nor'easter hit. The ones who got the worst of the hurricane got a foot of snow. I'm going up there tomorrow to help a friend. Her town is under marshal law. She says it's like a war zone. Her brother's house literally floated away.

I hope you didn't lose your power again. I just read your last few posts. That was pretty scary seeing those trees down on each side of your driveway. What if you had to get out?! It made me mad when I read about those kids who were mean to the people who came up from Florida to help but it made me happy when I read about what your son did. There are bad people in the world and there are good people. Someone here actually wrote a letter-to-the-editor complaining because the governor rescheduled Halloween. She thought it wasn't fair to her kids since we didn't get hit bad down here. What a selfish person! I know kids who lost EVERYTHING. My friend's kids don't have a single toy left. Not a single one. But then I saw school buses down at the Acme and people were filling them with canned goods and boots and blankets. Four buses went up to the disaster areas that day. It was a two hour ride so I know it must have cost them a thousand dollars in gas, just that one day. I try to focus on people like that. B.R. Williams was the bus company. I should mention their name. Anyway, I hope to update my blog on what's going on here soon. I'm okay and I hope you are too.

    1. Hi,
I'm glad to hear you are all okay. We are too. Didn't lose power in the last storm and finally got our phones back tonight. You're right there are good and not so good people all over. Glad to hear the bus company was helping out so many.

  15. Glad you have power + communication back! Let's have a weather emergency free finish to the year - shall we?!

Happy to hear about Mellon's improvement. He has such a sweet, regal look about him. Blue is just too funny. I always fall for the animals that easily navigate how to manipulate the humans. They get what they want, and they deserve it!

We're happy about the phones, the service here is dicey or non-existent. Let's hope we have a calm year weather wise and no more drama.

  16. I love hearding about your herd dynamics. Blue is adorable. The horses at my mom's house would look in all the windows until they coudl find us then give us a lazer stare so they could come in for dinner.
