"Happy Birthday Blue"

"Mr. Personality"

(All of our horses have their own song, Blue's song is "I'm Not Worried At All" by Moby)

As of March 26,1997 there was one more gorgeous paint horse arriving on the planet. The only thing I can say about Blue is that he is one unique horse who has never followed the crowd. There are so many of his antics over the years that had us laughing hysterically I’m afraid I’d never fit them into one short post. My all time favorite incident comes to mind and I will have to share it. Here’s what happened: the herd had all gotten to know where their stalls were at a barn we were leasing, so we’d occasionally let them mosey in from the pasture through the catch pen into their stalls. While we were in the barn directing traffic, we noticed all of the horses had made it into their stalls except Blue. When we went out into the catch pen to see where he was, we found him standing in the dumpster (which we kept inside the catch pen behind the barn) acting as naturally as he would have in his own stall. I think he had decided he’d like to sleep under the stars for the evening, and the dumpster seemed a likely place as it was full of shavings - sort of like a convertible model stall.  Only Blue…
Or the time he knew he was going to be ridden and went into hiding behind the run-in shed and thought to save himself by lying down. I guess he was under cover but he’d occasionally peek around the corner to see if I could spot him.
This past Thursday the vet was here to administer vaccinations.  All of the horses were rounded up and locked in the catch pen for easy access and the vet administered their shots outside.  When he was done he was looking a little baffled and said to his assistant, “I thought I got them all but I have one shot left.”  She goes down the list and called out all the names of the horses and yes they were all done and milling around the catch pen.  “Who are we missing?”  You guessed it, Blue.  He was nowhere to be found because he never made it to the catch pen but was out grazing over the culvert in the second paddock.  We all hiked out there and sure enough he looks up like it’s a revelation to him the herd was gone and he should have been with them. Blue moseyed over for his shot, turned around and left.  The vet said, “I guess he’s not herd-bound.”  We just laughed and told him he had no idea what a lone ranger this horse was. Blue can’t be bothered with following the herd or even grazing with them.  I’m of the opinion that he thinks he’s the smartest one out there and the rest of the herd are a bunch of idiots. Blue always has a better idea, or at least he thinks he does.
Happy Birthday “Biloxi Blue”
Until next time
Quote for Today
On the first day god created horses, and on the second day he painted the good ones.
